Monty Norman - The first man of James Bond music

Except... Monty still hadn't negotiated a contract with Harry Saltzman. So one day he phoned his producer and said, 'Harry, I've spent the last few weeks going backwards and forwards to Pinewood working with Bob Hope. I've completed all the other parts of the score. We've recorded the theme song, Call Me Bwana with Bob; John Barry has recorded The Big Safari, we've recorded all the incidental music. There is nothing more to be done. Isn't it time we talked money?'

Harry Saltzman made what can only be described as a remark as good as anything Sam Goldwyn ever uttered. He said: 'MONTY, IF YOU WANNA TALK MONEY, WE CAN'T DO BUSINESS!'

Well, they did finally talk business and Monty did finally get a contract out of Saltzman. Why he took the attitude he did Monty never did find out but, thanks to Saltzman, that was the end of his association with EON Films.
