Monty Norman - The first man of James Bond music
John Barry

Burt Rhodes was the orchestrator of the Dr No score, and a superb job he did. However, Monty felt that a current commercial orchestrator should be brought in to orchestrate the main theme. Several people suggested an up and coming young man named John Barry.
Burt Rhodes generously had no objection and John Barry's final orchestration showed brilliantly he was the right man for the job.
Monty took the main theme melody, originally played on the sitar, changed the last phrase and substituted the electric guitar. Barry and he were both into the guitar sound, Barry with pop records and Monty with Expresso Bongo on stage (probably the first time an electric guitar was used in a musical in the West End).
The beginning of the next part of Bad Sign Good Sign with the lyric: 'I was born under a bad sign...' gave him the beginning of the next section of the number. That and much of the rest of the theme organically developed to allow full rein for a big band sound, a sound which, since his days singing with the big bands had been his greatest love. |
